Safety in school grounds
I really need your help parents and remind you:
That we operate a 'drop off zone' and a one way system. We have had a few 'near misses as parents have not followed the one way system and have 'cut off' across the flow of traffic, to park in the area beside the canteen. I am very fearful that we will have an accident.
- That you need to be so careful when dropping off children. Pupils should disembark onto the pavement- not onto the road/ car park side, where cars are busily trying to depart.
- When driving off from your'drop off position' that you need to be mindful of other cars coming up from behind. We have had a few 'near collisions' re this.
- That buses are being held up when some of you stay too long in your 'drop off' position. I have frequently seen the bus unable to take the bend to get to its drop off position because some of you have left your car unattended or are delaying your departure to make phone calls etc, unaware that your vehicle is blocking the way.
I know that with your support we can make the process safer for our school community.

Principal's Update 19/4/24
Dear parents,
Thank you to the many families that joined us in St Brigid’s Church for the family mass last Saturday. It was a beautiful celebration and our children led the liturgy so well. Thank you to Caoimhe, Conall, Aoife, Sophie, Lucia, Evie, Conor, Aoibhe and Ella.
Our very busy Tuesday 16th April:
The school council represented us at a big meeting in Newry Library in the morning. They had been invited to attend by the newly appointed NI Commissioner for Children and Young People, Chris Quinn and they enjoyed the presentation he gave re the rights of all children. I was very proud of our pupils’ intelligent conversation, careful listening and beautiful manners throughout.
On the way back to school we called to the Cathedral Presbytery and presented a cheque for £863 to Canon Brown, the total of our Trócaire fundraising campaign during Lent. He will pass it on to Trócaire and was very appreciative.
That afternoon the Eco Council hosted the Judge from the Green Flag accreditation scheme. He spent one and a half hours with us and the pupils presented a detailed overview of all the Eco work that they have undertaken in the past three years before taking him on a guided tour of the grounds. They were enthusiastic, articulate and impressed him deeply. We await with fingers crossed the result of the visit and will hear in the early days of May, thank you Eco council!!!!!!!! Sincerest thanks to Mrs Mc Keown (who returned to school to lead the visit on the second day of her maternity leave- such dedication!!!!!) and Mr Byrne who has long played a key role in all things Eco in St Clare’s Abbey.
Big events for next week:
On Wednesday 24th we will host a special meeting for parents of P4 pupils who will receive the sacrament of First Holy Communion this year. It will be held from 2-3 in the school assembly hall and I know that your sons and daughters are looking forward to showing you how their preparation is progressing.
On Thursday morning Mr Clarke’s senior choir will be performing in Newry Feis.
On Friday Mrs Noonan’s Fireside singers and the P2 classes will perform in Newry Fees.
I thank our teachers for affording the pupils these lovely opportunities and I know that the children will have a wonderful time.
I wish you a happy weekend,
yours in partnership,
Mrs Monaghan
