January News; Mrs McKeown's / Mrs McGoldrick's class

28th Jan 2020

What a busy month January was and everyone has made a great start to 2020!

The children started off the year by taking a closer look at their local area. We went for a research walk to Hill Street and looked at the different buildings and landmarks that we could see. The children were excited to tell everybody about a time where they visited these buildings with their families, but were also very interested to hear about buildings and landmarks that they hadn’t seen before. This research outing was a wonderful learning stimulus.

In Literacy, the children have been learning to write more independently – a strategy which is very important at this stage of Primary 2. They have been writing exciting reports about the different places they saw on their adventures to Newry. We have been looking at extending our writing stamina through writing non chronological reports and fact files. The children enjoyed learning facts about Newry and dinosaurs as well as doing some research of their own.

In Numeracy, the children have been exploring practical methods of adding and subtracting numbers as well as using physical resources to help them solve problems. We all enjoyed practical lessons focusing on the topics of, weight, time, length, shape and space. We have been challenging the children to solve problems in as many different ways as possible. Parents please check out your child’s SeeSaw to see some examples!

In Learning through Play, the children used research from their walk in lots of different zones, they build buildings that they saw and the finished products made us feel like we were standing in Hill Street!

We are proud of all the boys and girls for working so hard this month, they really have outdone themselves!

Keep up the great work boys and girls!
