Paying tribute to the lives of former staff members of St Colman's Abbey PS or St Clare's Convent PS.
At the time of amalgamation it was agreed that funerals of staff of the former schools would not be attended by pupils from the newly amalgamated school. This was to avoid anyone being overlooked due to current staff being unaware of former connections with the schools.
That seemed like an appropriate arrangement at the time. However, having personally attended recent funerals of deceased former staff, I have become uneasy with this arrangement. Therefore, it will be modified as indicated below.
The family of a deceased member of staff of Abbey PS or St Clare’s PS, who retired from either school may request a school representation at their loved one’s requiem mass. If the mass is taking place during school hours and in a local church, we will try our very best to facilitate the request. Requests may be made via telephone 02830262175.
We cherish the contribution that former staff made to both schools, from which we grew.

Principal's Update 28/11/25
Dear Parents,
Thank you:
- For your support for the Book Fair. £2521.10 was spent by parents/ pupils and the school will receive rewards to the value of £1512.66 spend on books which will be a great benefit to us.
- Once more for supporting last week’s ‘pyjama day’- a healthy £218.35 has been allocated to the school council fund.
Advent- a time for preparation:
Our school will be decorated beautifully for Christmas next Monday by our wonderful staff. From next Tuesday onwards I urge you to have a little peek at the various cribs positioned around the school, when dropping off orcollecting your children. They will be absolutely beautiful and the children will be entranced by them. We love sharing the story of the Nativity with our pupils, it is one of the joys and privileges of our job. I hope that you will hear lots as the month unfolds and I ask you, if you can, to take your children to one of the churches in our town to see the crib scenes and the advent wreaths. We spoke about this at assembly today and the children were so reverent.
Each child will be given a Kris Kringle card to take home on Monday. It will contain the name of a fellow pupil and we ask that your child says a little prayer or gives a caring thought to that pupil each day during Advent. During the last week of school the class teacher will ask each pupil to bring in a Christmas card, bought or made for their prayer friend containing a thoughtful little message. The class will be gathered and the cards will be exchanged. We have been following this tradition for some time now and it is really lovely, showing us all that the exchange of a simple card can be every bit as meaningful as an expensive gift. Its success and impact is really strong when family members join in and think of the Kris Kringle friend in a special way for the month of December.
I remind families one more time that we have the ability to help out with Christmas if anyone needs assistance. If so please, please contact me by next week so that we can provide the best help possible.
Monthly Mass:
On Tuesday we will have our monthly school mass in St Mary’s Church @ 9.30am. Miss Jones’ P5 class will lead the liturgy and whilst all parents and friends are welcome a special invitation is extended to those with a child in her class.
Display of pre- loved school coats and Christmas Jumpers:
Please come on Monday and help yourself to our wide selection of beautiful coats and jumpers. They will be stationed outside the school office and will be distributed on a ‘first come, first served’ basis.
Looking forward to seeing you,
Yours in partnership,
Mrs Monaghan

Safety in school grounds
I really need your help parents and remind you:
That we operate a 'drop off zone' and a one way system. We have had a few 'near misses as parents have not followed the one way system and have 'cut off' across the flow of traffic, to park in the area beside the canteen. I am very fearful that we will have an accident.
- That you need to be so careful when dropping off children. Pupils should disembark onto the pavement- not onto the road/ car park side, where cars are busily trying to depart.
- When driving off from your'drop off position' that you need to be mindful of other cars coming up from behind. We have had a few 'near collisions' re this.
- That buses are being held up when some of you stay too long in your 'drop off' position. I have frequently seen the bus unable to take the bend to get to its drop off position because some of you have left your car unattended or are delaying your departure to make phone calls etc, unaware that your vehicle is blocking the way.
I know that with your support we can make the process safer for our school community.

Important
NUT ALLERGIES
Please do not send any types of foods containing any type of nuts into school for lunches as we have children with severe nut allergies. These items include biscuits and bars with a nutella type filling or croissants, pan au chocolate and brioche rolls. We ask parents to read the ingredients on these items before putting them in packed lunches.
We cannot allow products in school if the label states; "may contain traces of nuts."
If pupils bring products containing nuts to school, we will hold on to them and send them home uneaten at the end of the day.
We have been advised by the Allergy Nurse not to accept Horse Chestnuts / Conkers.
Please help keep children safe while in St Clare's Abbey.
