Our pupils had great fun exploring fractions this week using
Smarties! Each child received their own tube and used the sweets to help understand how fractions work in a hands‑on, visual way.
The total number of Smarties in each tube became the
denominator, and the number of Smarties of each colour became the
numerator. Children created and compared fractions such as:
- Red Smarties as a fraction of the whole tube
- How many were yellow, blue or green
- Which colour made the largest or smallest fraction
This simple activity helped pupils see fractions in a meaningful, practical context—and added plenty of excitement to our maths lesson!
