Hi autism mums/dads/carers in the Newry area

As many of you know, we are a new cafe in Newry called The Velveteen Rabbit. After talking to many of our friends and those who come into the cafe, we’ve realised that there is a need for an autistic-friendly cafe in the Newry area.

Being a mum of a child with ADHD I know the challenges being out and about when faced with different obstacles.

We want to reach out to as many parents/carers in the Newry area (and beyond) to get the feel for how we can cater to those who have autism/care for someone with autism to ensure their experience in our cafe is a joyful one.

For those of you who have already been into the cafe, you will know it’s a home-from-home, warm and friendly cafe, with no judgement.

We are all about love, connection and acceptance.

EVERYONE is welcome through our doors with love. If your child is screaming from the top of their lungs, do not worry, there is NO judgement here.

You will not be asked to be quiet or felt rushed out the door. We are here to help in any way we can.

From doing some research and chatting to some customers so far, the things we are putting in place are:

🔸 Cork coasters to limit the amount of ‘clattering’ noise
🔸Very low or no music at all
🔸’Sensory’ corners with available sensory packs
🔸No bending over tables to take orders
🔸 The option for families to write the order down themselves
🔸 Foam pads to cover the bottom of our seats to limit chair noise
🔸 Different coloured bowls to make sure different foods don’t touch

We would be so appreciative of any other suggestions. Our contact number is at the top of the page and our Facebook Page link is; HERE>>
