Message from Newry Cathedral

14th Dec 2020

The Irish Bishops have called for our homes to become “little churches” where we invite the Christ-child in. The age-old tradition of having a Christmas crib in the home and gathering there as a family to pray or to sing a carol will be especially meaningful this year. We invite you to share with us a photo or a memory about your crib.

The representation of the nativity scene dates back to 1223 when St Francis decided to help people to recall the poor surroundings in which Jesus was born and to bring to life the wondrous event of the incarnation. In the town of Greccio, with the help of a local landowner, a nativity scene was set up with a stable, animals and straw. People came at night from the town with candles and torches to attend Mass at the crib and seeing the scene be reminded of God's love for us in sending his only son so that we may have eternal life.
