Primary 5 Fire Safety Talk

21st Nov 2022

Today we were very lucky to have a visit from several firefighters from Newry Fire Station. The men spoke about how we can keep ourselves safe at home, as well as what to do and who to call if they were ever needed.

The firefighters discussed many different topics on how to stay safe in our homes and reduce the chances of fires starting.
They advised us not to leave candles unattended and to ensure they are kept in a safe place.

They also spoke about the dangers of lighters/matches, cigarettes, ovens and chip pans.

They reminded us that plugs should be switched off overnight and if they’re not being used.

They informed us that fire alarms should be tested once a week and the batteries should be replaced once a year. When the alarm needs batteries replaced, it will chirp like a bird.

Finally, they advised us to create a ‘Fire Plan’ for our house so we know what to do if there is a fire in different situations.

Three things they told us to remember:

  1. Get out
  2. Stay out
  3. Get the fire brigade out
