STEM in P2 through investigative water play

26th Mar 2020

Exploring and investigating water creates so much potential for scientific thinking as observed in the ways in which the P2 children engaged in this area. The children had a wide variety of resources to enable them to explore “water in containers” as a project.

Mathematical concepts became further embedded as the children naturally used the language of capacity / weight and learned from each other.

Children had to engage in frequent problem solving as they encountered different situations. So much opportunity for a community of enquiry to be created here. The children questioned the flow of the water, why it moved, how containers were suitable for different roles.

Children made real and genuine discoveries about items that floated and those that sunk to the bottom. They ran to teach their peers and share in the joy of these discoveries

Engineering skills were developed as they created swimming pools/ slides or simply used funnels/ tubes to further explore the waters..

Have a look at the learning.
